VOLUME XXIx JANUARY 19 AO DECEMBER THE JOURNAL serves the entire membership of the Na- tional Education Association. It has the largest circulation of any professional journal in the world. As the organ of the National Education Association its policy is determined by the resolutions and activities of the Association itself. It aims to give an overview of education. It emphasizes pioneer under- takings. It seeks to encourage among educators a_ broader interest in the larger problems of education and life. Persons binding their copies of the JOURNAL into an an- nual volume will use this sheet for a title page. The 1940 volume includes nine issues, one for each month except June, July, and August. Executive officers of the National Education Association— Donald DuShane, president; Willard E. Givens, executive secre- tary. The JOURNAL is the official organ of the Association— Joy Elmer Morgan, editor; H. A. Allan, business manager. Members of editorial staff—Lyle W. Ashby, Ethel Blake, Mildred Sandison Fenner, Eleanor Fishburn, Erle Prior. National Education Association of the United States 1201 SIXTEENTH STREET NORTHWEST, WASHINGTON, D. C. An Ideal of American Citizenship To be a good father, mother, brother, sister, or friend; To be a dependable, faithful, and skilled worker in home, school, field, factory, or office; To be an intelligent, honest, useful, and loyal citizen, with faith in God and love of fellowman; To recognize the brotherhood of man and to live by the Golden Rule These are the aspirations that have brought happiness and achieve- ment to the America we all love. These are the aspirations that must help us to find our way to new glory and grace in the midst of changes that are worldwide. A great civilization must have its roots in the soil of the past and its branches reaching to the stars of the future. Otherwise it lacks the experience, continuity, and motive necessary for noble living and great achievement in the present. Has the nation lost its way? Let it return again to the faith and inspiration of its youth to renew its strength. This faith is found at its best in the great documents, in the lives of great men, in the writings and addresses of leaders who in war and peace have quickened and purified the national spirit. —From the Foreword of The American Citizens Handbook, published by the National Education Association. 256p. $1.
