BERKELEY UNIVERSITY TEACHERS UNION, No. 1L7\ The Berkeley University Teachers Union has been chartered following an initial organizing meeting in the spring. We are calling our first fall semester meeting on Octs 21, 1963 at 8 P.M. in 110 Wheeler. All members of professorial status, lecturers, associates, supervisors, librarians, and those who have equivalent academic rank are invited to attend this meeting. The order of business at this meeting will be the election of officerse The following suggestions will be among the issues discussed: 1. An adequate medical service for the faculty operated and administered by the University itself, equivalent to the medical service provided for students at Cowell Hospital. 2. A better sick-leave policy. The present policy grants only 120 days with pay, with a possibility of twelve additional months in special cases. 3. Improvement of the faculty-retirement system by increasing the Regents! contributions, so that none of the contribution is deducted from monthly salary. hh. An adequate housing program for faculty members. Se A long-term faculty loan fund at low interest, enabling faculty members to awn their residences. , 6, Reduced fees for children of faculty members on any campus of the University, and part or total payment of fees and tuition of faculty members! children enrolled at other universities and colleges, 7- Better insurance plans for faculty members. 8. Statements by the Regents (like the recent statement on sabbatical leaves) which will facilitate deduction from gross income on income-tax foms of non-sabbatical travel expenses for research, attendance at professional and learned society meetings, and the like. 9. Inequities and discrepancies in teaching loads. 3 10. An effective grievance procedure, made increasingly necessary by the University's growth and greater administrative centralization. The local intends to work through the Academic Senate; we want to preserve a strong Senate, both statewide and on the Berkeley campus, and will take an active part in ity initiating legislation that will benefit the whole faculty. Other advantages of AFT membership are these: 1, The AFT has an organizational representative at Sacramento who represents the interests of all teachers in the state system. 2e The AFT offers life, property, and automobile insurance to its members at lower rates than can be found elsewhere, 3. Membership in the AFT provides a channel of communication with state college and junior college faculties, with secondary and elementary sehool teachers, to further eommon professional and economic interests, 4, Membership in the AFT provides access to the labor movement as a whole, since it is affiliated with AFL-CIO, and assures the support of the labor movement for the objectives of organized teachers and its help in times of difficulty. | Joseph Fontenrose and ad hoe committee
